Ukrainian community in Coimbra celebrates independence with an event at the market

The Ukrainian community in Coimbra will celebrate Independence Day with a cultural event at the D. Pedro V Market. Representatives of the Embassy and the Mayor will attend the event.

The Ukrainian community in Coimbra will celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24 with a cultural event at the D. Pedro V Municipal Market, where there will be artistic offerings, workshops and “lots of food,” it was announced on Wednesday.

The event, entitled “The Heart of Ukraine in Coimbra”, will take place on Ukraine’s Independence Day, 24 August, at the Municipal Market, between 11am and 11pm, with various cultural proposals, the organisers said in a press release sent to the Lusa agency, stating that the initiative has the support of the Coimbra City Council.

Throughout the day there will be workshops on traditional Ukrainian crafts, cooking sessions and artistic performances.he said.

“We hold a celebration every year, but this is the first time we have done it on this scale,” Olga Filipova from the organization told Lusa news agency, noting that the entire city is invited to take part in the event, which will feature “a lot of Ukrainian food.”

Although it is a day to celebrate “Ukrainian culture”, there will also be time to “remember that this culture is being destroyed”, he said, recalling the war and the Russian invasion that are ravaging the country.

“It will be bittersweet,” said Olga Filipova, adding that there will be a photo exhibition on the war, a screening of a documentary focusing on the first days of the invasion and also an “immersive experience” on the environment in the bombing zones.

According to the statement, although the event will take place throughout the day, it will have an official opening at 3:30 p.m., with the presence of “representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Portugal and the President of the City Council of Coimbra”.

Part of the funds raised at this event will go to the VeraCausa association, based in Coimbra, dedicated to supporting the community in Portugal and providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
