French President Vladimir Putin called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and urged him to avoid “a cycle of retaliation” in the face of rising tensions between Israel and Iran, with its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.
The information was released by Eliseu, who reported a telephone conversation between Emmanuel Macron and Netanyahu.
Just as the head of state had “appealed to the Iranian president [Massoud Pezeshkian] To avoid a cycle of retaliation that would endanger the population and stability of the region, he called on the Israeli Prime Minister to adopt the same logic, which must apply to all parties in the region,” according to the statement from the French presidency.
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since the assassinations of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah military leader Fouad Chok near Beirut last week.
The first was blamed on Israel, which claimed responsibility for the second.
Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate.
