Macron asks Netanyahu to avoid cycle of retaliation

Macron called on Netanyahu and asked the Israeli prime minister to avoid “a cycle of retaliation.” The French president also stressed the importance of “obtaining a ceasefire without delay.”

French President Vladimir Putin called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and urged him to avoid “a cycle of retaliation” in the face of rising tensions between Israel and Iran, with its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

The information was released by Eliseu, who reported a telephone conversation between Emmanuel Macron and Netanyahu.

Just as the head of state had “appealed to the Iranian president [Massoud Pezeshkian] To avoid a cycle of retaliation that would endanger the population and stability of the region, he called on the Israeli Prime Minister to adopt the same logic, which must apply to all parties in the region,” according to the statement from the French presidency.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since the assassinations of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah military leader Fouad Chok near Beirut last week.

The first was blamed on Israel, which claimed responsibility for the second.

Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate.

“In view of the increased tension on the border between Israel and Lebanon, all efforts [devem] “This will take place on the Blue Line, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, in order to prevent a regional escalation,” the French presidency stressed.

Macron also told the Israeli leader that “The absolute urgency” for France remained “to obtain without delay a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all hostages (…) and the massive and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid destined for the Palestinian population.”
