More than 7,000 arrested in August in Brazil for murder of women and domestic violence

From August 2 to 30, Brazil arrested 7,130 people for the murder of women and domestic violence and treated 73,336 victims, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security said on Tuesday.

“The number of urgent protection measures requested reached 49,542, and the number of urgent protection measures followed was 956,” the Brazilian authorities said in a statement.

More than 280 people were caught red-handed in operations in 1,285 municipalities.

In addition, 989.89 kilograms of drugs and 1,286 weapons were seized.

According to the 18th Brazilian Public Security Yearbook published in July by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, Brazil recorded an act of rape every six minutes in 2023, with a total of 83,988 cases.

The organization, which collects data from the Security Secretariats of all Brazilian states to conduct the survey, concluded that the total number of rapes recorded in the South American country grew by 6.5% last year compared to 2022. The rate of rapes stood at 41.4 per 100,000 people.

According to the survey conducted by the forum, the majority of rape victims were children up to 14 years old and vulnerable people (76%), women (88.2%) and blacks (52.2%).

Violence against victims with this profile generally occurred at home (61.7%)Most of the attackers were family members (64%) or acquaintances of the victim (22.4%).

In addition to cases of rape, the survey showed that there was an increase in all types of violence committed against women in Brazil last year.

The number of femicides increased by 0.8% in the country, totaling 1,467 cases in 2023. The majority of femicide victims were black (63.6%), between 18 and 44 years old (71.1%) and were murdered in their homes (64.3%). Most of the murderers were the victims’ partners (63%), ex-partners (21.2%) or a family member (8.7%).

Attempted femicides also increased by 7.1%, totaling 2,797 victims last year.

The survey found that domestic violence-related assaults increased by 9.8% (258,941 records) in Brazil, and cases of stalking or persecution increased by 34.5% (77,083 records). Sexual harassment cases increased by 48.7% (41,371 records), attempted murders increased by 9.2% (8,372) and psychological violence records increased by 33.8%, with 38,507 reports.
