More than 30 Iranian prisoners on hunger strike to commemorate the death of Mahsa Amini

More than 30 prisoners in Evin prison near the Iranian capital Tehran have gone on hunger strike to mark two years since the death of Mahsa Amini, one of the prisoners announced.

More than 30 prisoners in Evin prison near Tehran, the Iranian capital, began a hunger strike on Sunday, marking two years since the death of Mahsa Amini, announced Narges Mohammadi, detained in the unit. In a post in English, German and French on the social network Instagram, activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, detained since November 2021, reports that she is one of the 34 prisoners who began a hunger strike today.

“Once again, political and ideological prisoners from Evin have started a hunger strike in solidarity with the people protesting in Iran against the oppressive policies of the government” in Tehran, he writes.

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner, one of the most important voices in the defence of human rights in Iran, sentenced six times to a total of 13 years and three months in prison and 154 lashes, had already managed to use social media on Saturday. The Instagram network reported on the protest of dozens of prisoners in Evin, calling for “woman, life, freedom”, the cry of the movement created after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

According to Mohammadi, prisoners burned veils in the prison yard, a common act during protests sparked by Amini’s death.

Amini’s death, which will be two years old on Monday, was followed by protests that lasted for months and were brutally suppressed by the Iranian authorities, resulting in 500 deaths, ten executions and 22,000 arrests. Under the slogans “woman, life, freedom”, thousands of demonstrators called for the end of the Iranian theocratic regime.

Masha Amini was arrested by Iranian customs police on 13 September 2022, allegedly for not wearing the Islamic veil correctly, and ended up dying three days later, still in police custody.
