Angola extends the population census for another four weeks

The INE began the census on September 19, for a period of 30 days, but the outstanding difficulties forced the collection period to be extended for another four weeks.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Angola extended the collection of data for the 2024 General Population and Housing Census for one more month, due to the limitations experienced in the first two weeks of the start of this process.

The general director of the INE, José Calenge, said that once the 30 days scheduled for carrying out the census ended today, it was necessary to extend the period due to initial limitations with the payment of meals to census agents, problems with the management of tablets’, as well as difficulties in accessing remote and difficult areas due to the rainy season.

The census began on September 19, for a period of 30 days, but the difficulties highlighted forced the collection period to be extended by another four weeks.

According to José Calenge, “It is fundamental and prudent to ensure that all Angolans have the opportunity to register”.

Regardless of the announced limitations, he stressed, “work is being done”, pointing out “many good examples of improvement”, with data collection already closed in some municipalities in the provinces of Cuanza Norte, Zaire, Huambo, Cuanza Sul, Lunda. Sul, Malanje, Cuando Cubango, Uíje, Lunda Norte, Luanda, Moxico, Huila and Cabinda.

The official highlighted that although the deadline has been extended, there are provinces that may only need two or five days to complete the work.

“However, this The decision results from a careful analysis of operations in the different regions of the country, ensuring that this process, which is crucial for the necessary development, be carried out in the most comprehensive way possible,” he stressed.

This is the second population census that the Angolan Government carries out in the post-independence period, the last of which took place in 2014.
