Iberian Summit. Spain wants the TGV Lisbon-Madrid in 2030, Portugal gives priority to Porto-Vigo

While Spain defended the passage of the Lisbon-Madrid TGV in 2030, Portugal gave priority to the Porto-Vigo connection. Sánchez admitted that the Lisbon-Porto-Vigo connection is “the year 2032.”

The Government of Spain highlighted this Wednesday its commitment to connecting Madrid and Lisbon by high-speed train in 2030, while the Portuguese executive reaffirmed that it gives priority to the Porto-Vigo line, without advancing dates.

“The Spanish Government’s commitment to the AVE [alta velocidade] Madrid-Lisbon is 2030. I insist, it is the commitment of the Government of Spain and it is the horizon on which we are working,” said the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, at the final press conference of the Iberian summit that took place this Wednesday in Faro.

Sánchez added that regarding the Lisbon-Porto-Vigo high-speed connection, “the commitment of the Government of Spain”, which it shares with the Portuguese executive, “is the year 2032.”

The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, in the same press conference, stated that the national executive’s priority “is the Lisbon-Oporto-Vigo-Madrid connection.”

“It is the priority of the Portuguese team. We have already awarded the first section of this connection and we even want to advance the schedule as much as possible,” said Montenegro.

The President of the Government added that “the second priority is the Lisbon-Madrid connection via Évora-Badajoz” and, in this case, “there is a first section that is already on the ground.”

“Now it is necessary to reconcile the third crossing of the Tagus River in Lisbon with the construction of the high-speed connection in Évora. It is a process that is developed simultaneously with the construction process of the new Lisbon airport,” Montenegro recalled.

“We are working with both governments to try to combine work schedules from one connection to another so that they can be carried out in the shortest possible time,” added the Portuguese prime minister.

Regarding other railway connections between Portugal and Spain, and in line with the final declaration of the summit this Wednesday in Faro, they said that the connections between Aveiro and Salamanca and between Faro-Huelva-Seville will be studied.
