Iberian Summit. Montenegro highlights the “excellence of bilateral and multilateral relations” with Spain

The Portuguese Prime Minister highlighted this Wednesday the “excellence of bilateral and multilateral relations” with Spain, with convergent positions in the European Union, in relation to Mercosur and in relation to conflicts such as Ukraine or the Middle East.

In the final conference of the 35th Luso-Spanish Summit, which took place this Wednesday in Faro, Luís Montenegro highlighted that this meeting takes place 50 years after the democratic transitions in both countries “and almost 40 years after the beginning of these periodic meetings between two governments.

“This summit represents the strength of our bilateral relationship, the excellence of the relations between Portugal and Spain, whether in this direct bilateral component, or in the multilateral sphere, in the European context, in the context of several international organizations,” Montenegro highlighted, praising the signing of 11 legal instruments, especially in the area of ​​water, a central issue. of the meeting.

The Prime Minister considered the summit to be also relevant “at the level of innovation, science, education or culture”and highlighted “Convergent positions” of the two countries. in most European affairs.

Montenegro highlighted the importance of the future Spanish European Commissioner, Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, as well as the Portuguese Commissioner, the former Minister of Finance María Luís Albuquerque.

On the other hand, he maintained that “Europe has a great advantage to deepen its relationship with Mercosur and to finally be able to reach a trade agreement with this geography.”

“From an international point of view, fundamental values ​​also unite us in the field of preserving peace, guaranteeing human rights and, therefore, both Portugal and Spain reiterate their permanent, unequivocal and continuous commitment to support to Ukraine, reaffirm the need for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza,” he highlighted.

Montenegro further stated that Both countries are attentive to the “electoral process” in Venezuela and said that he will soon be with Pedro Sánchez again, at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November.

“We will also be at the forefront of those who give importance, in European politics and global politics, to not abandoning territories where our presence is fundamental, and I am referring in particular to North Africa and the Sahel, whose cooperation has also been a dominant feature of our diplomacy at the multilateral level.“He also highlighted.

The President of the Portuguese Government thanked the Head of the Spanish Government for his cooperation and friendship and left a word of confidence about the future of relations between both countries.
