The Brazilian president, Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, defended this Wednesday the peace talks to end the war in Ukraine, during his participation, by videoconference, at the summit of the bloc of the main emerging economies (BRICS).

“Avoiding escalation and starting peace negotiations is also crucial in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia”Lula stated in the last words of his speech to the participants in the summit, which is taking place in the Russian city of Kazan.

The Brazilian ruler, who together with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping promotes a peace initiativewhich Ukraine already rejected, made this reference to the conflict on European soil after talking about the war that Israel launched in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon against the Palestinian armed group Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

“At a time when we face two wars with the potential to become global, it is essential to recover our ability to work together towards common objectives,” highlighted the Brazilian leader.

In his participation, via videoconference, from Brasilia, Lula also said that “The time has come to move forward” in the creation of an alternative payment system that allows emerging countries not to use the dollar in their exchanges..

Lula maintained that the new payment system should reflect the aspirations of a multipolar world defended by emerging countries.

Putin guarantees that the formation of a multipolar world “is underway”

“The time has come to move forward in creating alternative payment methods for transactions between our countries. This is not about replacing our currencies. But we must work to ensure that the multipolar order to which we aspire is reflected in the international financial system,” he said.

Lula canceled his trip to Russia on medical advice, after suffering a fall at home on Saturday, which caused a cut on the back of his neck, requiring five stitches.

The Kazan summit is the first for the group of emerging economies after its expansion from five to nine members in January.

After the small-format meeting, the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia) will sit at the table with representatives of some 20 states invited to the event, including Turkey , Bolivia, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

At the end of the summit, the leaders of The BRICS will adopt a joint statement on a number of global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.

The BRICS group, founded informally in 2006 and holding its first summit in 2009, includes countries representing about a third of the world economy and more than 40% of the world’s population.

International analysts highlighted that at this summit, the Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to show the world that Russia is not as isolated as the West claims.while attempting to pave the way for the formation of a new global front that aims to challenge the hegemony of the United States.
