The body of a child of about five years old was found in the municipality of Chiva by a dog from the cynological service of the Valencia Civil Guard. The news is reported by the Spanish newspaper Las Provincias. The child’s lifeless body was located on Wednesday in Barranco de Palos, next to the Loriguilla industrial estate. It is a wooded area, surrounded by abundant crop fields. The Spanish newspaper assumes that the body was dragged by the water to this point.
The number of confirmed deaths from the October 29 floods in Spain rose to 219 and the authorities have a record of 93 missing people, according to the most recent official reports. The previous official figures were 217 dead and 89 missing.
The majority of fatalities come from the autonomous community of the Valencian Community, in eastern Spain, where 211 deaths have been confirmed.
In the region of Castilla La Mancha, in a neighboring area of the Valencian Community, seven more people died and there is still one fatality due to last week’s storm in Andalusia, in the south of the country.
These data were confirmed on Wednesday night by the Minister of Internal Administration of Spain, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in an interview with Cadena Ser radio.
Regarding the number of missing people, the authorities said that as of 8:00 p.m. this Wednesday there were 93 confirmed cases. and recorded by mixed teams of police and forensic doctors created for this specific purpose.
These cases of missing persons correspond exclusively to reports in which relatives provided data about the people they were looking for, as well as biological samples. which will later allow the victims to be identified, if the bodies are found, as explained by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, under whose supervision is the Data Integration Center (CID), a structure that works in cases such as the last storm of the week.
According to the CID, the total number of people missing in the floods may continue to change, due to the possibility that some cases have not yet been reported and because there are currently 54 bodies that have not yet been identified in the morgues of Valencia, whose data are being crossed with those of the disappeared.
Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has highlighted that the data relating to the missing are “maximum sensitivity” and the information can only be disclosed through the CID, based on “objective data”highlighting that it is also the way to combat misinformation and false rumors that circulate on social networks and other channels related to floods.
