Floods in South Sudan affect 1.4 million people

Floods in South Sudan affected 1.4 million people and displaced more than 379,000. The alert was given by the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Affairs.

Floods in South Sudan have affected 1.4 million people and forced the displacement of more than 379,000, announced the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In a statement released at the end of the day on Friday, the UN agency also warned of an increase in malaria in several regions affected by the rains.

This resurgence of malaria, as it is also known, overloads the health system and “exacerbates the situation and impact in flood-affected areas,” OCHA explained.

The last assessment, carried out a month ago, counted around 893 thousand people affected by the floods and more than 241 thousand displaced due to bad weather.

According to humanitarian organizations, South Sudan is facing the worst floods in decades, especially in the north.

The floods affect 43 counties and the administrative region of Abyei, an area claimed by Sudan and South Sudan.
