Senator John Tester (D-MT) predicted in an interview with CBS on Wednesday that food prices will rise during the summer months, but there should be no famine unless there are weather issues.
The tester said: “Look, we have a problem with the drought west of the Mississippi last year and the Ukraine and Russia attacking this country that gives so much food to the world, especially the Middle East and North Africa. . . . I think if we make Mother Nature smile and if we give it some moisture, an American farmer can do very well in terms of production in this country. But I’m sorry, I think prices are going to go up. I think it’s a double-edged sword. Prices are going up and everything else goes up with them, and with resources tripling, prices are actually going to go up in 2018. “We’re seeing it probably quadruple since then. So, that’s good news in the grain business if you’re in this business. But there are other branches of agriculture that aren’t doing well. Barn operators are having a hard time. So we have to be aware of these things and help American farmers We must make sure that we empower them to do whatever they can to help give the world the food they’ve done so well for generations. I think these will be reactivated if Mother Nature gives us the opportunity to do this work.
