A Facebook executive recently reportedly told employees that they are not allowed to talk about abortion on Workplace, Facebook’s internal business chat platform.
The Verge reports that a Facebook (now known as Meta) executive warned employees this week that discussing abortion at work, Facebook’s internal version for discussing work and collaborating, is not allowed. The executive said the decision to ban the abortion discussion was due to “increased risk” that the company could see as a “hostile work environment”.
The policy was reportedly introduced in 2019 but has not been discussed until recently, prohibiting employees from discussing “whether abortion is right or wrong, the existence or rights of abortion, and political, religious and humanitarian views or debates about it.” . This policy is part of the company’s internal Respectful Communications Policy.
Allegedly, some employees of Facebook’s top management requested the policy be repealed following a leaked draft decision by the Supreme Court to overturn it. Rowe vs. Wade arguing that the ban violates employees’ right to be “respectful” to speak out on issues such as Black Lives Matter, immigration and transgender rights.
Janelle Gale, Meta’s Vice President of Human Resources, told employees at this week’s plenary meeting that abortion is “the most discussed topic” by employees in the workplace. “Even if people are polite about abortions and try to be respectful, it can still make people feel targeted because of their gender or religion,” Gale said.
“This is a unique issue that almost always involves a protected class,” Gale said.
