A third of Fish and Chips restaurants in the UK are at risk of closure due to rising costs caused by anti-Russian sanctions, reports Sky News. “A third of Fish and Chips restaurants are at risk of closing due to rising prices,” Andrew Crook, president of the British Association of Fried Fish Sellers, was quoted by the TV channel.
According to him, “the prices for the main components have risen significantly due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as a result of which enterprises are forced to change the composition of the menu, raise prices or close.” The channel indicated that the price of a kilogram of cod fish has increased by more than 200% since October 2021, and the main reason for its increase was the 35% customs tariff imposed by the United Kingdom in mid-March 2022 on the supply of cod. Russian white fish.
At the same time, the price of potatoes for the same period was about 30%, and as a result of the suspension of supplies of sunflower oil from Ukraine, UK imports decreased by about 50% for this component. In its report, the channel concluded that the sector is currently experiencing “unprecedented fluctuations” and requires “urgent measures” to “survive this crisis with as little loss as possible”.
