PAN calls for a new strategy for agriculture and renewable energies on the Day of the Azores

The deputy of the PAN/Azores, Pedro Neves, said this Monday, on the Day of the Region, that it is urgent to create a “new strategy” for agriculture and renewable energies, noting that the archipelago is “especially vulnerable” to crises .

In his speech at the solemn session of the Day of the Azores, in the municipality of Lagoa, Pedro Neves stressed that the region’s economy is “dependent on foreign countries in almost all consumption sectors.”

The sole PAN deputy advocated that the Azorean economy be “based” on “heavy public administrative machinery” and “on a rudimentary and poorly diversified agri-food industry.”

“Therefore, it is urgent to redesign collective consumption options at the regional level and review a new strategy for agriculture and renewable energies, consolidating efficient productive areas, adding value to horticulture, fruit and the new cereal chain,” he said. .

The parliamentarian stressed that the Azores are “particularly vulnerable to crises”, reinforcing the need for the region to assume “its own sovereignty”.

“Autonomy, to maintain its authenticity, requires the realization of its integrity. Therefore, nostalgic returns to the past are not enough. A present reflection is fundamental to choose a future horizon”, she underlined.

The Day of the Autonomous Region of the Azores was instituted by the parliament of the Azores in 1980, through Regional Decree no. The date, a regional holiday, is celebrated on Monday in Espírito Santo.

This year’s ceremonies take place in Nonagon – São Miguel Science and Technology Park, with speeches by the President of the Government of the Azores, the President of the Legislative Assembly and parliamentary representations and groups.
