The Japanese government asks to reduce electricity consumption

Japanese authorities warned Monday of electricity shortages as the country sees record temperatures and the capital Tokyo experiences the shortest rainy season since 1951.

“We ask you to reduce power consumption in the early evening,” at a time when power supplies are at a low point in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Japanese government assistant secretary-general Yoshihiko Isozaki said.

At the same time, the Japanese government recommended that the population protect themselves from the heat and avoid heat stroke.

During the day temperatures of 35ºC (Celsius) were announced in the Japanese capital, where thermometers must not drop below 34ºC before Sundayaccording to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The rainy season should be going strong by now in most of Japan, but JMA has already announced that it will end on Monday in the Kanto region, where Tokyo is located, in the center of the country and on part of the island. of Kyushu (southwest), also setting a record.

This was one of the shortest rainy seasons, ending 22 days earlier than usual, since Japan began recording comparable data in 1951.

On Sunday, the thermometers rose to 40.2ºC in the town of Isesakia hundred kilometers north of Tokyo, at the hottest temperature ever recorded in Japan, in June.

“Immediately after the rainy season, many people are still not used to the heat, which represents a higher risk of heat stroke,” warned the JMA.
