The French prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, warned this Saturday that Europe must prepare for a possible interruption of Russian energy exports, after the sanctions on Moscow, for the invasion of Ukraine.

“A drop in shipments is credible [de energia] from Russia to Europe”, he pointed out, calling for measures to be taken to reduce external dependency and create internal employment, while fighting climate change.
In a colloquium at the Economic Meetings of Aix-en-Provence, a forum that meets every year in that city in southeastern France, Élisabeth Borne said that “reality should not be hidden“, between news about the reduction of Russian gas shipments to several countries, such as Germany, and the fear that the flow of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be cut.
The Prime Minister of France said that her government will soon introduce “an energy sobriety plan“, which aims to rapidly mobilize the entire population to reduce consumption, renovate old homes and decarbonise transport and industry.
“It is an opportunity to strengthen our sovereignty and generate jobs in our territory,” he said.
In his opinion, it will also allow avoiding “the vulnerability” that is estimated to happen regularly with “the rise in the price of a barreland that affects “the purchasing power of millions” of people.
The other great consequence of the abandonment of fossil fuels will be the acceleration of the fight against climate change.
“We want to be the first country to abandon fossil fuels,” he concluded.
