Sever City Council without money to finish works started in the previous legislature

The Chamber of Sever do Vouga, in the district of Aveiro, will resort to the bank to finish several works started in the previous legislature, chaired by António Coutinho (PS) who lost the last municipal elections by the social democrat Pedro Lobo.

“Last year, before the elections, a series of works were started by the previous executive that were not properly budgeted and it was necessary to contract a loan of 1.75 million euros to cover all expenses that were not committed,” the mayor, Pedro Lobo, told Lusa.

One of the main works in question is the highway that connects Silva Escura with Dornelas, which is still on beaten earth and which, according to the mayor, was started without having paid for the land.

The construction of the Arrota road and the requalification of the municipal swimming pools, the Pessegueiro riverbank and the São Mateus Square are other works that were started by the previous executive without the necessary funds for their completion.

“When a work begins, there must be room for its completion.. In the case of highways, it makes no sense that there is no room for all phases of the work, and that is what happened here. In other words, they did not leave enough money to carry out the works”, said the mayor.

Pedro Lobo accuses the previous executive of having assumed “commitments for the future without being properly contracted“, adding that without contracting the loan it would not be possible to finish the works, because the Chamber “has no money available”.

with the votes of the PSD/CDS majority, two votes against the presidents of the Junta de Talhadas (CDS) and Couto de Esteves (independent) and the abstention of six deputies from the PS and one deputy from the PSD.

Mayor also warned of the financial difficulties of the municipalitya, adding that, when he became president, he found a debt of more than three million euros, left by the previous executive.

The mayor hopes during this legislature to be able to regularize the accounts, through management “more strict“, having ordered the performance of an external forensic and procedural audit.

“This mandate is to finish many works, it is to do some new works and it is to put the house in order,” he concluded.
