Electricity consumption in Spain falls 3.7% in the first week of savings

electrical consumtion fell 3.7% from the first to the second week of Augustwhen the energy saving measures of the Government of Spain began to be applied, the Vice President and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, announced this Wednesday.

According to the EFE agency, the minister described the decrease as “a significant reduction in the total heat waveat a press conference in Mahón, capital of the island of Menorca, to take stock of the measures to reduce energy consumption, in the context of the war in Ukraine, after a week of implementation.

Teresa Ribera attributes the decrease in electricity demand in the week of August 8 to 14″to the greater sensitivity of families and companies in relation to the responsible use of energy and the measures of the decree-law” that establishes that the refrigerated spaces have a minimum temperature of 27 degrees and that the heating, when winter arrives, does not exceed 19, as well as the storefronts turned off at night

The minister considered that the first response to the measures was “extraordinarily positiveand that the savings were within what was calculated by the Government.

Teresa Ribera explained, however, that the data is preliminary and the first week of implementation of the measures coincided with a heat wave in much of Spain, but that “the trend is clear in terms of civic engagement and understanding of the context in in which these are developed, measures have been adopted that require the solidarity and effort of society”.

Ribera explained that the data has been influenced by the high influx of tourists to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, so that the level of savings and efficiency in the Peninsula in the first week amounts to 3.9%, compared to the previous week, and, when entering the data of the two archipelagos, it drops to 3.7%.

For families, the Government advocates encouraging, disseminating and helping to reduce the bill through self-consumption, energy rehabilitation, the electrification of final consumption or the change of boiler, “but without introducing mandatory limitations that, on the other hand, would be very difficult to control.” ”.

“In principle, We do not contemplate restrictive measures for the industry or for families“, the minister underlined, emphasizing that “measures that favor the process of changing the type of energy consumed” are on the table.

Regarding the interconnections between the Member States of the European Union, Ribera stressed that these are “important European policies” that “require the maximum involvement of the European Commission and all the Member States”.

“Building Europe means building a common energy policy and adding infrastructure,” he added.
