In the C-SPAN Washington Journal published Friday, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) argued that electric vehicles in California can still be charged eight hours a day and that California’s recent ban on new gas-powered vehicles. By 2035, this is a boost to national security, because “if we produce oil, we can export it to countries that would otherwise depend on Russia and Iran.”
Sherman said: “The problem is that electric cars can be charged between 10 pm and 6 am. This is not the time we will lose power. This is when another demand drops. Electric vehicles can power the grid in the future and during critical times that some already have, and then use their batteries and draw power from the grid during that time and will be between 10 PM and 6 AM. Less than 1% of our electricity currently goes to electric vehicles.”
Sherman specifically discussed the ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in 2035, saying: It will now be a decade or more before the number of gasoline-powered vehicles drops to a small percentage of those driving on Highway 405. However, we see that the prices of electric vehicles are falling. We see tax cuts approved and signed by the president of Congress. We can see American-made energy in our cars, and if we can produce oil, we can export it to countries that depend on Russia and Iran. So this is a big step forward for our national security.
He later added that fossil fuels would not be banned completely.
