Revolut was the victim of a computer attack, the fintech confirmed on Tuesday. The Bleeping Computer website announced on Monday that improper access to the company’s systems allowed access to the data of thousands of Revolut customers.
A company spokesperson told outlets including Bleeping Computer and TechCrunch that the company was the target of a highly targeted attack. “We immediately identified and isolated the attack to effectively limit its impact and contacted customers who were affected. Customers who did not receive an email were not affected.”
For TechCrunch, the company specified that “a small percentage (0.16%) of customers were affected, for a short period of time.” According to the website, the company has about 20 million customers.
The security incident took place on September 10, and the company reportedly isolated the issue during the early morning hours.
The information that has reached the entity in charge of data protection in Lithuania, where this fintech has the banking license, points to 50,150 affected clients. It is detailed that these figures include “20,678 [clientes] in the European Economic Area”, with “hackers” gaining access to names, email addresses, addresses, phone numbers, part of the payment card data or account data. Specifically in Lithuania, 379 customers will have been affected.
In the message sent to affected customers, quoted by Bleeping Computer, it is specified that “the card data, PIN or passwords were not accessed.” A company spokesperson also told the site that “customer money is safe, always has been.” “All customers can continue to use the cards.”
