The Spanish government “is working” on the possibility of creating a new “temporary” tax on large fortunes, following a proposal by United We Can. The information was confirmed by the Spanish Finance Minister, María Jesús Montero, quoted by El País.
If confirmed, the tax could come into force on January 1, 2023. It would be a separate tax from the tax on real estate, which is levied by the autonomous communities and which has generated a tax war between territories -but the minister did not give more details- Details Details: “Let the technicians do their job.“.
María Jesús Montero defended that it is necessary”ask for more effort” to companies with extraordinary profits, specifically in the energy sector, and to those with “higher yields”.
The tax that already exists is levied on assets – real estate, shares and bank accounts – over 700,000 euros. But it has already been suspended in some communities: Andalusia recently announced that it will not charge it, after Madrid made progress in that regard. Murcia has also admitted to doing the same.
From what little is known, it is only public that the new tax will be temporary and should take effect early next year. El Mundo adds that it will be included in the budget proposal of the Spanish State for 2023.
