Ericsson. “The government needs to reassess the relevance of 5G” and have a “sense of urgency” in the implementation

Andrés Vicente, CEO of Ericsson Iberia, was in Portugal for a company event, which aimed to demonstrate the potential of 5G, the fifth generation of mobile networks, and some practical cases of what it can do. From industry to logistics, without forgetting entertainment, the head of the network infrastructure equipment company stresses that Portugal you can’t risk being left behind in 5G.

“Portugal is part of Europe and Europe is stay behind compared to the rest of the world in 5G deployment. Europe is far behind”, he says, in conversation with the Observer. “Europe is falling behind for many reasons, the main one being that it is fragmented from the regulatory point of view”, contextualizes. In addition, the fact that there is a large number of telecommunications operators in the Old Continent, especially compared to markets such as the United States or China, also makes the process difficult, defends this official.

“This means that investment is quite fragmented in Europe and the return on capital for telecoms operators is much lower than in other areas. This is a key point and I think it is intrinsic to the business model and regulation in Europe”, explains Andrés Vicente. And pull the numbers to refer to the highest levels of 5G deployment in other markets: while the European Union and the United Kingdom have deployment levels of 20%, the US has 65% of the population covered by 5G, while in Australia the numbers are also higher, of the order of 75%. And, in the latter case, Andrés Vicente points out that it is not even “a country with a long technological history”.
