The 24-hour strike of the Lisbon Metropolitan workers scheduled for the 12th was called off, but the unions have already delivered a new strike notice for October 25, it was announced Thursday.
In a statement, the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (FECTRANS) explains that the decision to call off the strike scheduled for next week had to do with the arbitral tribunal’s decision to order the provision of minimum services during the strike, “clearly ignoring the characteristics of underground work and the responsibility to guarantee the safety of workers and users”.
However, and because the unions will not “abandon the fight”, three plenary sessions will be called for the day the strike is to take place, “seeking to cover as many workers as possible,” the note reads.
Today we will deliver a new notice of strike, to save time, with respect to the 10-day notice, for next October 25 and we will discuss with everyone the continuation of the struggle and the measures to be taken”, indicates FECTRANS.
In previous statements to Lusa, Anabela Carvalheira, from FECTRANS, explained that the strike scheduled for the 12th was related to demands for wage increases and better working conditions.
Also according to the trade unionist, the administration of the Metropolitan of Lisbon seems “irreducible and without negotiating capacity”, so the negotiation process started months ago did not conclude.
Therefore, the workers “do not have wage increases, which, given this situation with an inflation of 9% per month, is not admissible at all,” he said, stressing that “the workers are losing purchasing power.”
In addition, added the trade unionist, there are still workers in the Metropolitano de Lisboa.
