The PS maintained until the last moment the suspense about what it would do with the 16 housing projects – the majority on the impacts of the rise in interest rates on housing loans – that were debated and voted on Thursday in Parliament. The general recommendation was to block the opposition initiatives (BE, PCP, Chega, PAN and Livre), but at the end of the day two projects (one from the Bloco and the other from Livre) ended up being approved, after pressure on the Government by of the socialists
The subject is delicate and in the majority benches it was expected that the Government could give a signal to the families that owe their house to the bank and that they have seen or will see the quotas skyrocket due to the rise in interest rates. In the last general policy debate, the Prime Minister kept the issue at the pondering stage and referred it to the business relationship between banks and their customers.
The insistence of the opposition in recent days forced the PS to take a position now and, in turn, the socialist parliamentary leader, Eurico Brilhante Dias, together with the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, pressured the Government before this signal already arrival. in this debate, through the viability of some of the projects.
