Half of teleworkers point to illegal surveillance by the employer

Almost half of the workers who are or have been teleworking state that the employer has used inappropriate electronic mechanisms to control the working day. The conclusion, which Negócios e Dinheiro Vivo advances this Tuesday, is contained in a study requested by the UGT and coordinated by the former Socialist Secretary of State Paulo Pedroso.

The “most frequent” practices, which include sending emails or messages periodically (71%) and using software to record work and break times (38%), do not conflict with the guidelines of the National Commission for the Protection of Data (CNPD) . But there is a “significant proportion of respondents who report being asked to keep the video camera on all the time and who say they used software to capture images of the work environment.”

In numbers: 21% of workers surveyed said their employer required them to have their video camera on at all times and 19% mentioned the use of software to capture images of the work environment. “The integrated analysis made it possible to verify that close to half of the teleworkers reported that their employer adopted procedures or technological solutions to monitor/control work time and work activity that current legislation considers inadmissible,” says the report, which states ” lack of preparation on the part of employers” and the lack of “workable solutions”.

The report also reveals that the definition of a fixed amount of monthly compensation for teleworking costs was the modality most chosen by companies (52%). The survey was conducted between August 23 and September 11, 2022, with the participation of 1,007 people.
