Automobile production in Portugal increased by 12.4% until August, up to 221,525 vehicles, the ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal reported this Thursday in a statement.
According to the organization, “in August 2023, 11,610 motor vehicles were produced in Portugal, which represented an increase of 1.1% compared to the same month in 2022.”
Thus, “in accumulated terms, in the eight months of 2023, 221,525 vehicles left the factories installed in Portugal, that is, 12.4% more than in the same period of the previous year,” highlighted the association.
According to ACAP, “The statistical information relating to the year 2023 confirms the importance that exports represent for the automotive sector with 97.9% of vehicles manufactured in Portugal are destined for the foreign market, which contributes significantly to the Portuguese trade balance.”
The ACAP data point to a growth, in the first eight months of the year, of 12.5% in passenger car production, up to 172,252 vehicles.
In the case of light goods, the increase was 11.6%, reaching a total of 45,687 vehiclesin the same period.
Finally, in the case of heavy vehicles, the growth was 15.7%, up to 3,586 vehicles.
Europe continues to be the first market for exports of vehicles manufactured in national territory – with 88.6% -, with Germany (19.9%), France (15.0%), Italy (12.6%) and Spain (9.2%) at the top of the ranking. ”ACAP said.
According to the association, “by large regions, the Asian market, led by Japan (2.8%), maintains second place in exports of automobiles manufactured in Portugal with 5.6% of exports.” with Africa in third place with 2.5% of motor vehicle exports manufactured in Portugal.
