The diploma that allows pensions to be updated from the year following their granting was promulgated by the President of the Republic, according to a note published today on the Presidency’s website.
This is a change in the legislation that regulates the updating of pensions granted by Social Security and the Caixa Geral de Aposentações, determining that these will have their first increase in the year following their granting, something that has not happened until now.
In this way, pensions started in January 2024 will be updated from January 2025.
“The President of the Republic promulgated the Government diploma that modifies the rules for updating pensions granted by the social security system and the Caixa Geral de Aposentações, establishing as a principle the updating of the value of the pension from the year following the start of the pension,” states the note published on the Presidency website.
This measure was approved by the Council of Ministers on October 2, after which the Government stated that the update in 2025 of all pensions granted in 2024 has an estimated cost of 42 million euros.
The pension update formula is established by law, taking into account economic growth and the inflation rate.
