In a recent interview with BBC World Service’s The Conversation, Martha Kaufman said it was incorrect for the show to refer to the character as “Chandler’s father”.
“Even though Chandler’s father is transgender, we have repeatedly called him Chandler’s father. I don’t understand pronouns yet. That’s why we don’t call this character “he”. It was a mistake,” Kaufman said.

Kaufman said he once fired someone for joking about a transgender crew member.
“I’m really excited to create an environment where we have a fun set and a fun team,” Kaufman said. “It is very important to me that where we are is safe, tolerant and without shouting. I fired the guy right away for making a joke about a trans operator. This is not possible. ”
According to Breitbart News, Kaufman recently made up for the sitcom’s lack of diversity by donating $4 million to Brandeis University, which he graduated from to create a professorship in the school’s African and African American Studies department.
