Nolte: Mister, we can use directors like Wolfgang Petersen again

German director Wolfgang Petersen, who passed away this week at the age of 81, is a great example of how a man doesn’t know how great he is until he dies.

Imagine living in a country where the film industry produces movies like the one below. in the line of fire (1993) flash (1995) number one board (1997) perfect storm (2000) and Trojan (2004).

Petersen directed all these movies.

He did all these movies back to back.

And these movies weren’t just big hits, reputable big hits; Headlines that we still watch today, headlines that repeat over and over on the wires, because networks know we’re going to stop and watch. Lots of garbage making money. Somehow, Petersen managed to get to the top of the Hollywood food chain for a dozen years without bombing the trash can. Instead, he made timeless, celebrity- and crowd-pleasing statements that never bothered the audience – our intelligence or who we are and what we believe in.

I have over 3,000 movies, and my 12-year-old niece recently came to visit, and when it was her turn to grab one from the pile, she shot it. in the line of fire. What does this tell you?

This tells you two things: 1) what Petersen created is timeless, and 2) we should thank Petersen for getting on the train to Hollywood before the lawless Gestapo outlawed his art style.

This is not to say that Petersen has nothing to say about his blockbuster films. He had a lot to say, a lot. But what he said sounded old. He doesn’t “own” anyone. All Petersen wants is to entertain, excite, move, cast magic, and get us out of the theater knowing we’re getting more than our money’s worth. But there was always meaning in his work, a human theme that only a Nazi from Voketard could deny.

The best example of this is the movie. made Wolfgang Petersen: 1981 German masterpiece PreloadingThe film is so sure of its anti-war theme that it brings to mind WWII Nazis as the main characters. See how terrible and brutal the war wassaid. It’s scary that you feel sorry for the Nazis.

there is no way in the world Preloading after this fascist era – you sympathize with the Nazis?!?! – and what a loss not only for the anti-war cause, but also for good movies.

Movie lovers lost director Wolfgang Petersen in 2006. Poseidon (2006), the only stinking post-perfect run in history that few directors have matched. is is Poseidon Such a disaster, despite the fact that countless directors have kept their careers alive after many flops, Hollywood Petersen? Or…

Did Petersen see the fascist graffiti on the Hollywood wall? After all, it was the early 2000s when Hollywood started losing its common sense over George W. Bush, Iraq and losing the election. At the same time, everything became hyperpoliticized.

I don’t know what happened to Petersen, why he disappeared from the director’s chair. This is probably the more difficult of the two options above. What I know for sure is that in today’s intolerant, inhumane, anti-artificial Hollywood, Petersen will not be allowed to make films like his: timeless and intellectual entertainment for all, even for us the poor.
