A study published in the journal Laryngoscope found a strange association between high cholesterol levels and “phantom odor perception.”
Phantom odor perception is defined as reporting an unpleasant, bad, or burning odor when nothing is present.
To reach this conclusion, cross-sectional data were collected as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014, resulting in a nationally representative sample of 7,417 adults 40 years of age and older.
Participants reported vascular conditions, including a history of stroke. Total cholesterol was also measured. A major finding was that adults with diagnosed but controlled high cholesterol reported placebo smells more often than those without high cholesterol.
Stroke is associated with a 76% greater chance of sensing a phantom odor.
Adults with diagnosed but controlled hypertension reported more placebo odor than those without hypertension.
Additionally, the researchers noticed three times the likelihood of feeling phantom odors in adults older than 60 with diabetes, but only in those using insulin and oral medications.
They concluded: “Stroke, angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, well-controlled hypertension, and high cholesterol are associated with phantom odor perception.”
