The information office of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia announced that scientists at Petersburg University have developed a method of diagnosing bladder and prostate cancer without surgical intervention.
The office statement indicates that one of the difficulties doctors face in fighting tumors of the urinary system is the difficulty in diagnosing them in time, which complicates and reduces the success of their treatment. To overcome this difficulty, scientists at the University of Petersburg have developed a rapid method for diagnosing prostate and bladder cancer, based on urine analysis.
“We suggest using the entire composition of urine to make a conclusion about the presence or absence of these cancers in a patient. To do this, we analyze urine samples using a specially designed chemical sensor array and process the results. ” said Professor Dmitry Kirsanov, head of the university’s Department of Analytical Chemistry. Using machine learning techniques. This method is currently used in chemical research, and we are working on creating a model where the interaction of sensors will show whether a patient is sick or not. ”
According to the Ministry of Education and Science, the advantage of the new method, compared to other testing methods, is its speed and non -invasiveness. And the result can be obtained without pain and without medical intervention. This method will allow rapid analysis of large population groups without the use of expensive special equipment.
Analysis of urine samples from 87 patients showed that the sensitivity of the rapid test was higher, which means that the result was more accurate than the PSA blood test, where the accuracy of the diagnosis of prostate cancer reached 97 percent and bladder cancer in 76 percent.
