Lula asks Trump to assume responsibility “for the maintenance of planet Earth”

The Brazilian Head of State stressed that world leaders must “guarantee that rivers remain healthy, with clean water and that the biomes of all countries are preserved.”

The Brazilian head of state, Lula da Silva, asked this Thursday the American president-elect, Donald Trump, to assume responsibility “for the maintenance of planet Earth.”

“All of us We have to take responsibility for the maintenance of planet Earth.. We need to ensure that the planet does not suffer warming of more than 1.6 degrees,” Lula da Silva said in an interview with CNN International, referring to one of the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The Brazilian head of state, which is home to the largest rainforest in the world and is currently suffering from an unprecedented drought, stressed that world leaders must “ensure that rivers remain healthy, with clean water (…) ensure that everyone’s biomes the countries are preserved.”

“I believe that the President Trump has to think that he is an inhabitant of planet Earth.”, said.

Lula da Silva, who had declared his preference for the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, congratulated Trump on his electoral victory this Wednesday, in a message in which he wished the new Government luck and stated that “democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected.”

Even so, the differences between both leaders are clear when it comes to environmental policy, one of Lula da Silva’s priorities, which reinforced the fight against deforestation in the Amazon and which will host the COP30 climate summit, which will be held next year.

Trump, for his part, expressed skepticism about the existence of climate change and, during his first term as President (2017-2021), he decided to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement.
