Yesterday, the World Health Organization announced 780 laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox in 27 countries outside the endemic countries, while emphasizing that the global risk remains moderate.

The organization suggested that the number of victims from May 13 to Thursday was 780 less than the actual number, due to limited epidemiological and laboratory information.

And the UN health agency said that “other countries are likely to find cases and the virus will spread further.”

Only a few cases have been recorded requiring transfer of victims to hospitals, as well as patients subject to isolation for health reasons.

The organization listed countries where the disease is not endemic and has the highest number of infections, namely the UK (207), Spain (156), Portugal (138), Canada (58) and Germany (57).

In addition to Europe and North America, injuries (in a number) were recorded in Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.

An infection is considered in a country where the disease is not endemic.

The World Health Organization said: “Some countries are announcing that new generations of infections will no longer appear only in known contacts of previously confirmed cases, indicating that transmission chains are not determined. ”

And in his latest statements about the outbreak, he pointed out that “while the risk to human and public health remains small, the risk to public health could be high if the virus takes advantage of the opportunity to gain a foothold in countries where it is not endemic. as the cause of widespread human disease. ”

He added: “The World Health Organization assesses the worldwide risk as moderate because this is the first time that this number and clusters of monkeypox infections have been declared simultaneously in countries where (the disease) is endemic and non-endemic. . ”

According to the World Health Organization, most of the injuries reported so far have been reported by sexual health services and other agencies, and most of them involve men having sex with men.

The organization said many cases do not fit the traditional clinical presentation of monkeypox, with some reporting blisters before symptoms such as fever and ulcers at different stages of development, which not ordinary.

The World Health Organization has indicated that no outbreak-related deaths have been reported in countries where the disease is not endemic, but injuries and deaths continue to be reported in areas where it is considered endemic.

The organization lists countries where the disease is endemic such as Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gabon and Ivory Coast, in addition to Ghana, where it is found only in animals.

The first seven countries mentioned recorded 66 deaths in the first five months of 2022.

Last week, the World Health Organization hosted an online conference of more than 500 experts and 2,000 participants to discuss monkeypox, information gaps and research priorities.

Experts stressed the need for clinical trials of vaccines and treatments to better understand their effectiveness, and called for accelerated research into the epidemiological spread and transmission of the disease.
