Seven Ukrainian artists who have taken refuge in Portugal received artistic scholarships from the São João National Theater (TNSJ), in Porto, and are already developing projects for that institution, it was announced on Tuesday.
In scholarships were awarded within the framework of the project “Ukraine – Free Stage”with an endowment of 75,000 euros, created by that national theater as a result of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the consequent humanitarian crisis.
According to the TNSJ, there are still applications under analysis and three other artistic scholarships should be awarded by the end of this month.
The seven scholarships already awarded include three actresses, a scene photographer, a video artist, a pianist and a dancer and dance teacher.
These seven people have already begun to develop national theater projects, namely, “in the process of being created” the production “Ensaio sobre a cegueira”, directed by Nuno Cardoso, whose premiere is scheduled for June 10.
In a statement, that national theater explained that soon fellows will create “workshops” and activities in the area of the Educational Center“with the school community in mind, but also the Ukrainian community in the region” and can also “integrate projects developed within the program itself”.
With the “Ukraine — Palco Livre” project, the TNSJ “intends to promote the integration of Ukrainian artists and other cultural professionals who have just arrived in Portugal in a stable production structure and open a programming space that allows them to resume artistic activity in in its own right”. host country”.
The scholarship program was announced in March, shortly after the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, and at the time the TNSJ indicated that it planned to award between 20 and 40 artistic creation scholarships to Ukrainian cultural professionals.
