The 11 finalists selected for the Correntes d’Escritas Literary Award

Works by Hélia Correia, Margarida Vale de Gato, Rosa Oliveira and Luís Filipe Castro Mendes are among the eleven finalists for the Casino da Póvoa Literary Awardwhich will be delivered in February, at the Correntes d’Escritas festival in Póvoa de Varzim.

The other authors whose works were selected are Rosa Alice Branco, AM Pires Cabral, Regina Guimarães, Rui Almeida, Rui Laje, Maria do Rosário Pedreira and António Cabrita, indicates the organization of the festival, in a statement.

At the Official Opening Session of this year’s edition of the Meeting of Writers of Iberian Expression.

The winner of last year’s edition was the Portuguese writer Luísa Costa Gomes, with the book “Afarr-se”.

According to the organization, around 90 books competed this year, including “Accidentes”, by Hélia Correia; “Love Cão and other words that don’t train”, by Rosa Alice Branco; “Shooting the crooked”, by Margarida Vale de Gato; “Notebook of Memories”, by AM Pires Cabral; “Notebook of the two sisters and what they knew”, by Regina Guimarães.

The works “Cinco Cavalos Abatidos y otros poemas”, by Rui Almeida, “Errático”, by Rosa Oliveira; “Firmament” by Rui Lage; “My human body”, by Maria do Rosário Pedreira; “Sadness [um díptico e meio]by Antonio Cabrita; and “Voltar”, by Luís Filipe Castro Mendes.

The jury consisted of Fernando Pinto do Amaral, Helena Vasconcelos, José António Gomes, José Mário Silva and Patrícia Portela.

The literary prize, sponsored by the Casino da Póvoa, recognizes both prose and poetry, and counts, as previous winners, works such as “O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas”, by Lídia Jorge (2007), “A Terceira Miséria”, by Hélia Correia (2013), “A lie a thousand times repeated”, by Manuel Jorge Marmelo (2014), “Categories and other landscapes”, by Fernando Echevarría (2015), “The shape of the ruins”, by Juan Gabriel Vásquez, and “Your excellence of the present body”, by Pepetela.
