“Rabo de Peixe”, Netflix’s new Portuguese original series, premieres in May, the streaming service announced Tuesday. The first images of the series were also revealed, which is joined in the cast by names such as José Condessa, Afonso Pimentel, Pêpê Rapazote, Albano Jerónimo, Maria João Bastos and Salvador Martinha.

The creation by Augusto Fraga, produced by Ukbar Filmes and directed by Fraga and Patrícia Sequeira, is “inspired (very loosely) by a real event” by telling “the fictional story of four friends who see their lives change with the arrival of a ton of of cocaine off the coast of the small Azorean town of Rabo de Peixe,” the press release read. “The series is a thriller with touches of sarcastic humor and a story based on hope, dreams, friendship, love and the sea that promises to conquer and captivate the Portuguese public”.

In the images released this Tuesday, you can already glimpse the scenes of the series, which was filmed in the Azores, but also in Mafra. “It is a great pride to be able to show the Azores to the world, telling an incredible story in one of the most special places on the planet. This is a series of pure entertainment and adrenaline, but at the same time, a reflection on the fortune and fatality of the human condition. Being Azorean myself, I am very happy to bring this adventure to Netflix screens”, says the creator and director, quoted in a statement.

This is the second Portuguese series for Netflix made entirely in Portugal, after “Glória”, by Tiago Guedes, produced by SPi, and which premiered in 2021. “Rabo de Peixe” was one of the winning projects of the contest promoted in 2020 by the streaming platform with the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA) to support Portuguese audiovisual production in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
