“As governor, I promised the people of Oklahoma to sign every life-protection law that comes to me, and I am proud to deliver on that promise today,” the first-term Republican said in a statement.
“From the moment life is conceived, we as humans have an obligation to do everything we can to protect the life of this child and the mother. I believe that, and so do most Oklahoma residents.”
The only exception to Oklahoma law is the saving of a pregnant woman’s life or pregnancy through rape or incest reported to law enforcement.
The AP said the bill explicitly allows doctors to “take a stillborn child due to spontaneous abortion or miscarriage,” or to eliminate an ectopic pregnancy, an often life-threatening emergency that happens when a fertilized egg implants outside the womb. fallopian tubes and early during pregnancy.
The law also does not cover the use of a birth control pill such as Plan B or any form of birth control.

Oklahoma is one of a growing number of Republican states trying to reflect the core tenets of the Texas Heartbeat Act because the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Texas law to remain in effect while cases against it are pending.
