German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin will only show his commitment to the success of the peace negotiations if he realizes that the Ukrainian resistance is not really can be overcome. The report of the intervention is carried out by the British broadcaster Sky News.
The German chancellor also addressed the rest of the Western countries and the world, saying: “We cannot allow Putin to win this war or dictate the terms of peace.” And she took aim at the Russian regime: “A major nuclear power is behaving as if it has the right to redefine borders.”
Putin wants to return to a world order where he can dictate what is right, where freedom, self-determination and sovereignty are not for everyone,” he added.
Olaf Scholz also referred to the German position towards Russia. Germany has been criticized for being lax in its military support for Ukraine and for resisting cutting economic ties with the Kremlin (because of its dependence on Russian gas). But Scholz was keen to point out, quoted by Deutsche Welle: “For the first time, Germany is supplying weapons to a war zone, including heavy weapons.”
The German chancellor is the only head of state from the G7 countries to attend Davos.
