On Wednesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) opposed the idea that arming teachers would help prevent more school shootings.
CNN Newsroom host Jim Sciutto asked Hoyer how much it would cost to pass the Token Weapons Act in the House of Representatives because he knew there wouldn’t be enough support in the Senate to pass the bill.
Hoyer said they have yet to produce a message “other than turning our schools into armed fortresses”. He condemned the arming of teachers and said it would not make schools safer.
“We still haven’t learned what those messages are, other than turning our schools into armed forts,” Hoyer said.
“Look, I’m here for the school guards, to keep our schools safe. I like to keep the doors locked. But the theory is that if we give guns to more people, be it teachers, school staff, if we just give guns to more people, we’ll be safer somehow, not really that way. He added, “This is not true. And it doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world. There is no gun violence in big countries, democracies, dictatorships, or in any other country in the world where there is gun violence like in America,” he said.
