The President of the Government, António Costa, resumes his agenda this Monday and travels to London, where he will be received by his British counterpart, Boris Johnson, according to a note released this Sunday by the office of the Portuguese executive leader.
For health reasons, the President of the Government canceled his agenda for Wednesday and was prevented from participating in the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities on Friday and Saturday, in Braga and London.

“The Prime Minister, António Costa, resumes his agenda on Monday, with a trip to London, where he will be received by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson. The meeting takes place in the early afternoon at the official residence of the British Prime Minister – 10 Downing Street,” the note read.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists at the Portuguese embassy in London, after being asked about the possibility that Prime Ministers António Costa and Boris Johnson could finalize a global political agreement on Monday on the new cooperation framework between the two countries.
“the first Minister [António Costa] and the Portuguese Government have been working hard on it with the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and with the British Government. as the prime minister [português] will be in London on Monday, that means that the conditions have matured to take a step forward towards an agreement”, defended the head of state.
Asked about the possibility that Portugal and the United Kingdom could soon conclude a bilateral agreement also from a commercial point of view, although without conflicting with the rules of the European Union in relation to third countries, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated that this “is possible”.
“And preparations have already begun in the previous government, chaired by the same prime minister. As long as it does not conflict with the European Union, each Member State is free to have bilateral relations”, stressed the Head of State.
On this point, the President of the Republic stressed that “this has already happened in relation to various rights, including political rights, of British citizens in Portugal and of Portuguese citizens in the United Kingdom.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the global agreement to be signed between Portugal and the United Kingdom “does not contradict” the rules of the country’s membership of the European Union.
“This agreement is complete, showing that Portugal can be a very interesting bridge with the traditional ally United Kingdom within the European Union”, he added.
