The President of the Republic considered this Sunday that the retirement of qualified workers admitted by the State is a “sign that society has changed” and that the State has to readjust itself to compete with the attractiveness of the companies.
On the sidelines of a meeting with Portuguese residents in Andorra, about the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was asked about this Sunday’s headline in Público, which reports that a fifth of the qualified professionals admitted by the state retired.
It is a sign that society has changed. When I was young, the State was very attractive because civil society was very weak”, replied the Portuguese head of state.
In the opinion of the President of the Republic, after April 25, 1974 “there were no really attractive alternatives” in the business fabric and in the social sector, but this reality contrasts with the current one.
The State, considered Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “has to readjust itself and that readjustment has to be done at a faster pace” to compete with the “much more attractive” conditions of companies and the social sector.
“It is a situation that did not exist 40 years ago, 30 years ago, that 20 years ago was different and now there is an effective situation of attracting qualified people who receive proposals that lead them to leave important places in the State,” he said. he concluded.
According to Público, of the 860 senior technicians hired by the State in a tender launched in 2019, a fifth withdrew and ended up without signing a contract. The average age of these workers was 35 years.
