PS/Porto defends the municipal police dedicated to the Movida area

The Porto municipality of the Socialist Party (PS) defended this Wednesday the creation, within the Municipal Police, of agents dedicated solely to the Movida de Porto area, whose regulation is under public consultation.

In a statement, the Political Commission of the Municipality of Porto of the PS claims to have presented seven proposals in the revision of the Movida regulationthe result of a “wide consultation process of the city” in which “neighbors, representative associations of the sector and owners of establishments” have participated.

Cited in the document, the PS councilor in the Oporto Chamber, Tiago Barbosa Ribeiro, points out that the measures presented they intend to “improve the conditions of the residents without endangering the commercial activity of Movida”.

Among the measures proposed by the Socialists, the creation of an “own branch” stands out, in the Municipal Police of Porto, of agents dedicated to the Movida area and to “enforce the regulations”.

These agents will be in charge of receiving “complaints through dedicated channels”, carrying out “inspection routes” and ensuring “the safety of consumers, establishments and neighbors”, articulating the work with the powers of the Public Security Police (PSP) .

The creation of neighborhood associations “in each artery or nucleus of arteries”, through specific regulations that ensure representativeness before the municipality, is another of the proposals presented, as well as the extension of the Movida regulations to other areas of the city where they exist are nightlife spaces, such as Rua da Alegria, Rua de Santa Catarina and Rua de D. João IV, “where there are establishments that, due to their size and impact on the lives of residents, must be regulated as establishments integrated in the Movida”.

The PS also suggests limiting noisy activities, raising consumer awareness to avoid “abusive behavior on public roads”, prohibiting street vending and reinforcing the obligations of establishments.

On May 2, the Chamber of Porto unanimously approved the modification of the Movida do Porto Regulations for public consultationthat incorporates delimitation of zones and restrictions on opening hours to guarantee “quality of life and security”.

In the new regulations, the Movida do Porto area is “expanded” and is now differentiated into three different areas: “Movida Core, Protected Zone and Containment Zone”.

The revision of the regulation, whose public consultation ends on the 30th, aims to “adapt it to reality” post-pandemic and try to mitigate problems related to the so-called bottle and sale of alcohol at the gate.

The Movida do Porto Regulations were approved on May 25, 2015, by deliberation of the Municipal Assembly of Porto, and published in the Diário da República on July 3 of that year.
