Petro election in Colombia strengthens the left in Latin America, says Lula

Former president and current candidate for the Brazilian elections, Lula da Silva, said on Sunday that Gustavo Petro’s victory in Colombia’s presidential elections strengthens leftist forces in Latin America.

The historical leader of the Brazilian left supported Petro in the electoral campaign as part of a movement to promote the return of the left to power in Latin America, as has already happened in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.

Former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff (2010-2016), also from the Workers’ Party (PT) of Brazil, also celebrated the “historic victory” of the left in Colombia and highlighted its importance for the rest of the continent.

“It is a great victory for the brave Colombian people and it is also an encouragement and renewed hope for all Latin American nations that are fighting for democracy and against neoliberalism,” he said.
