Lisbon metro closed on Sunday due to workers’ strike

The circulation of the Metropolitano de Lisboa will be interrupted on Sunday due to the workers’ strike, foreseeing interruptions from 11:00 p.m. on Saturday and the resumption of service at 06:30 a.m. on Monday, the company reported today.

The information was provided by Metropolitano de Lisboa on its website.

The strike, between 00:00 and 24:00 on Sunday, was called by the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions, against the lack of working conditions and the salary increases of 0.9% proposed by the administrationBetween other reasons.

According to the union, the workers decided to maintain the strike, scheduled for a few weeks, despite the announcement by the Metropolitan of Lisbon that it has already begun to hire drivers and reinforce maintenance teams.

The hiring results from an authorization granted by the Government, within the scope of the Plan of Activities and Budget for 2022, for the hiring of 58 workers: 34 transit agents, 13 maintainers, two construction inspectors and nine specialized technicians.

Another of the issues on which the trade unions do not agree is is the salary increase of 0.9% proposed by the companythat the unions consider “well below the country’s inflation”.

In addition to the 24-hour strike, workers are on strike for overtime and special events until the end of this month.

Last week, the Metropolitan of Lisbon assured that it is available to search “joint solutions to improve working conditions and remuneration” and also for “staff increase”.

Between March and May 2022, workers in the area of the operation, machinists and managers carried out a total of eight partial stoppages, between 5:00 am and 9:00 am, according to the company.

Sunday’s stoppage occurs on a day when the Rock in Rio festival takes place in Parque da Bela Vista. In this sense, the organization indicated that it has created, together with the Lisbon City Council, more car parks with a direct shuttle to the event venue.

The Lisbon Metropolitan operates daily with four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia) and Red (Airport-São Sebastião).

Normally, the metro runs between 06:30 and 01:00.
