A new study by the American PewResearch Center shows that Americans “overwhelmingly view China as a competitor or enemy of the United States, not as a partner.” The study, which was conducted on different groups of the American people, also showed that “most adults in the United States do not believe that their country is winning the competition for geopolitical influence on a global level.”

Almost half of Americans (47%) believe that the influence of the United States in the world “weakens in recent years.” At the same time, only one in five says that “American influence is increasing”, and 32% say that American influence “has remained almost the same.”

Citizens’ sense of their country’s strength contrasts with their sense of China, and two-thirds of the adults in the study felt that Beijing’s influence “has grown stronger in recent years.” Nearly one in five Americans say “China’s global influence is strong” and only one in ten thinks “China’s influence is waning.”
