The Social Democratic Workers (TSD) defend, in the motion that will be taken to the PSD Congress, that the party remain “in the political center” and that the role of social consultation be recovered in the face of the “damage inflicted” by the PS Government .
In the thematic proposal to which Lusa had access —titled “PSD: United in the name of Portugal”—, it is also suggested to consider new ways of financing Social Security, as well as “the expansion of the allocation of unemployment benefits or the allocation of a kind of universal basic income” to prevent further social exclusion.
In the text, the TSD welcomes the election of Luís Montenegro as the new president of the PSD and defends “the unavoidable role” of the PSD as “a great party of the political center.”
“The PSD (…) must remain faithful to its social democratic ideological matrix that places it in the political centerrejecting, in the same way, collectivism defeated by history and a certain unregulated capitalism insensitive to social progress”, they affirm.
The autonomous structure for the labor and union world of the PSD argues that the social consultation must be “the structural pillar of dialogue” for any possible reform of the Labor Code, which they want to keep “stable.”
“The TSD regrets the very strong devaluation that, in recent years, the PSOE governments have made of the social agreement and partners in an attempt to please the parties of their left (…) It is urgent to repair the serious damage inflicted on social coordination and the trust that is necessary between the Partners and the Government“, they refer.
On the other hand, they highlight the risks of increasing automation in the labor context for the financing of Social Security, which is based on the collection of a Single Social Tax per worker.
Therefore, this structure advocates changing the Social Security financing paradigm “bonus labor-intensive firms at the expense of capital-intensive ones”.
“These should contribute more to mitigating the social effects of automation and technological unemployment, which, moreover, is usually structural depending on specialization and the needs for adequate training and little compatible with the profiles of certain workers,” they propose.
In the 22-page motion, the TSDs also propose the revitalization of collective bargaining mechanisms — in the public and private sectors — to agree on “salary updates that take into account the increase in the cost of living through inflation.”
Still in terms of wages, they consider that “the appreciation of the minimum wage is important to ensure the recovery and improvement of purchasing power and the reduction of poverty.”
“However, it seems that, despite its substantial increase in recent years, the average salary has not risen, generating situations of salary crushing with the consequent situations of injustice, discontent and lack of motivation at work,” warn the Workers. Social Democrats.
At the PSD Congress, which takes place from July 1 to 3 in Porto, only the president-elect can present a global strategy motion, while thematic proposals can be presented by the board, by the various autonomous structures of the party ( JSD, ASD and TSD), by regional and district structures or signed by 1,500 militants or 50 delegates.
