Accompanied by the commander in chief of the National Republican Guard, Minister José Luís Carneiro visited this Thursday, in Sant’Antioco (Sardinia), the 20 GNR soldiers who have been participating since March in the Frontex mission called ‘Themis’ and whose main functions to control migratory flows and prevent cross-border crime.

The minister highlighted the “signed competence” of the GNR “in the supervision and participation of missions in integrated border management, maintaining that it is simultaneously “recognized today as one of the security forces that makes a relevant contribution not only to the fight against crime associated with human trafficking, but also to other forms of “organized” crime, which require “police cooperation in European terms”.
The official also highlighted another of the functions of the GNR in this mission, which involves “humanitarian treatment and respect for the human rights of those who seek more dignified conditions in Europe.”
José Luís Carneiro also said that the The Portuguese security forces and services “are always available” to support the European Border and Coast Agency.
“The GNR, in the last 15 years, has had 1,000 military personnel engaged in Frontex missions and is available to continue to actively participate in the improvement of this border guard in European terms,” he stressed.
In addition to the commitment of the Portuguese staff with Frontex, the minister said that the country is, “at the same time, committed to fulfilling the commitments with the European asylum and migration agency, which deals with the dimension of accompaniment and reception of immigrants. who are looking for Europe”.
