The Government and leaders of the indigenous protests in Ecuador reached an agreement on Thursday to end the demonstrations that have paralyzed the country for more than two weeks and have left six dead.
The agreement, mediated by the Catholic Church, foresees a total reduction of 15 cents (on the dollar) in the price of fuelone of the main demands of the protesters, who are mostly farmers from the Andean highlands and the Amazon region of the country.
“We are going to suspend the protest movement,” said the leader of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie), Leonidas Iza, the organization that is leading the protests.
“We have achieved the highest value to which we all aspire: peace in our country. the strike is over“, wrote the President, Guillermo Lasso, on the social network twitter.
We have achieved the supreme value to which we all aspire: peace in our country.
The stop is over.
Now we are working together on the task of transforming this peace into progress, health and opportunities for all.

The agreement also contemplates the creation of a negotiating commission, the end of the blockades and demonstrations throughout the country, and the lifting of the state of emergency in force in four regions.
On the other hand, it contemplates the revocation and revision of two decrees, the first on the extent of oil exploration in the Amazon, the second on mining.
