“We want a smaller State, but more professional, rigorous and capable”, says Liberal Initiative

The president of the Liberal Initiative (IL) defended this Sunday that he intends have a smaller statebut also more competent and able to respond to problemsand it is necessary to attribute recognition and working conditions to the civil service.

“We want to have a smaller, more professional, more rigorous State, more capable of responding to problems. But, being smaller, it has to be much more capable, much more competentwhich implies giving the entire public function, starting with officials, the recognition and working conditions that they have not had until now,” he stressed.

At the end of the National Council of the Liberal Initiative (IL), which has been held since this morning in Coimbra, João Cotrim de Figueiredo stressed to the journalists that for this evaluations need to be reintroduced systematicallyas well as progressions based on these assessments.

National Council of the Liberal Initiative Sunday with urgent structural reforms on the agenda

“It is necessary to have a space and resources to recognize the work, to adequately reward the work of these people. Without that we cannot have a competent public administration and we cannot have a properly functioning country,” he added.

According to the leader of the Liberal Initiative, which has criticized the PS “for incompetence to manage public affairs and public services in particular“He pointed out that this is one of the structural reforms to be carried out in Portugal.

In his opinion, even the fires that devastate the country, “can only be prevented with a duly trained public administration, with people capable of making decisions on time and without fear of managing the political and media agenda, without always being afraid of how They are going to see the decisions that are being made.”

“What seems to me is that in the case of fires you only react after tragedies happen and to avoid further electoral or media damage. This is not the time to count shotguns, it is the time to act and prevent all the damage that can be prevented, but if there are political responsibilities to be drawn, we will be here later to do it, ”he warned.

To the journalists, the leader of IL also said that in health “you have to do almost everything“, which is also one of the “essential structural reforms”.

“As long as the system does not have the resources, not only public, but social and private, at its disposal, this problem will not be solved,” he stressed.

Another of the public services that “is in chaos” is Education.

“Warning as the school year will open in real chaos, with a shortage of teachers from almost all sectors in secondary education. I dare to say that we will have more than 100,000 students without a full faculty, ”he said.

For João Cotrim de Figueiredo, the PS “is clearly incompetent”.

“He only manages for the media agenda, he only manages to try to stay in power and who ends up paying the highest tax burden in history, and has the lowest public services in history, are the Portuguese”, concludes.

The XXIII National Council of Liberals, which takes place today in Coimbra, had on its agenda “the analysis of the political situation, with a focus on the theme ‘Portugal: the urgency of structural reforms and European convergence’”.
