Sheriff Joe Lombardo, the Republican nominee for governor of Nevada, urged the Nevada judge to resign, who made “anti-police” comments at a court hearing earlier this week.
The Nevada Globe reported that Clark County District Judge Erica Ballou, a black woman, made statements against the police while speaking to a black defendant during the trial.
“You make the decisions not to stay away from the police,” Ballou told the defendant. “You are a black man in America. You know you don’t want to go anywhere with the police.”
Ballou added that he doesn’t want to be “wherever the police are”.
“You know you don’t want to be anywhere with cops, because I know I don’t, and I’m a middle-aged, middle-class black woman,” Ballou continued. “I don’t want to go where the police are because I don’t know if I’m going to die,” he said.
Lombardo called for his resignation and urged Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak (D) to insist on his resignation.
Lombardo aforementioned:
In a courtroom incident earlier this week, Judge Erica Ballou repeated anti-police rhetoric from her seat, raising serious concerns among law enforcement officials. Judge Ballou’s comments and conduct in the courtroom show that he is biased against law enforcement and is completely against a fair and independent judiciary. Today I call on Judge Ballou to resign, and I also call on Governor Sisolak to demand Judge Ballou’s resignation.

Lombardo was not alone in the judge’s calls for his resignation. The Las Vegas Police Protection Association also called Ballou’s comments “a disgrace to the judges” and demanded his resignation.
A former public defender and active supporter of Black Lives Matter, Ballou made headlines in September 2016 after a judge asked her to remove a BLM pin from her suit.
“I believe the courtroom is the right place to discuss criminal justice issues. This is not a political speech, it does not support a particular candidate,” he said.
